The blog
Desert Blooms
Photo gallery. 2013 was a rainy year for the otherwise water-thirsty Arava Valley, Israel. Seeds that laid dormant for years, some from northern regions, sprouted and bloomed, creating spectacular colorful niches in the otherwise parched land.
Snowy Edom Mountains
Photo gallery. Edom Mountains snow. It actually snowed on the Jordanian Edom Mountains in Jordan the year of 2013, resulting in amazing views of snowy peaks in sheer desert, as viewed from the Israeli Arava Valley.
Prologue
Northeast America sola trip – a 62-year-old Israeli/ American camping journey through nine American and Canadian states, with a focus on Nature, culture and self management. Prologue provides easy navigational tips and a “warning”.
Introduction and Benefits of Traveling
From flipping through the world atlas on my grandmother’s couch to the banks of the St. Lawrence. Why Canada, the lure of the North and genreal musings about the benefits of traveling.
Getting Ready- Preparing for My Camping Trip
Preparing for a camping trip : Practical info (and some philosophical musings) about “things”: technical details – equipment, physical preparation, gadgets (from “electrical spoons” to GPS). Traveling is always very personal, but I hope other people could find useful information for their own journeys as well.
On This and That – Thoughts about Traveling
Some general thoughts about my trip, including how the mode of traveling defines the experience, Israeli vs. American campgrounds, being alone, safety, money, empowerment, politics, the social scene, temperatures, beauty, and why I wrote this journal.
Getting There
A Turkish Airlines transatlantic flight from Tel Aviv started my trip with a colorful stop in Istanbul ,followed by breathtaking views over Greenland at low altitude. The eventful high-contrast day ended in the quietude and tranquility of the Maine woods.
Little House by the Pond
A small wooden house by a quaint Maine pond became my home away from home, Maine. Swimming, kayaking, sailing, picking blueberries and preparing for my upcoming sola camping trip in the north, I received the best possible hospitality and started to get acquianted with the natural beauty of the northeast.
The Magic of Loons
It was no jackal nor coyote. This haunting other-worldly sound breaking intermittently over the Pond and carrying over unabated across the entire waterscape from side to side and beyond, did not emanate from a large mammal, but from a kind of middle-sized duck romantically called a loon…
Bluegrass Festival and a Blueberries Patch
Perfect carefree days by the pond: swimming, sailing the pontoon with family and friends, writing poems, sunbathing on the dock, picking blueberries from the secret bushes and enjoying a variety of good music at the Ossipee Valley Bluegrass festival. Especially notbale was the all-female Shel band.
Atlantic Maine
Staying at two Maine private campgrounds, Lobster Buoy and MountainView, I had my first American camping experiences, got acquainted with this wondrous Atlantic coast, and its significant tides, and learned from kids about burrowing clams. Also, Lobster Weekend, Owl’s Head lighthouse and the awesome Fort Knox bridge.
A Warm Welcome to a Cold Country, Campobello Island
The exciting ordeal of crossing from the land of stars and stripes to that of the maple leaf, from the toughness of border police to the warmth of an island home. My one and only cherished couchsurfing experience, and strong Canadian ladies. Welcome to Campobello Island!
Campobello Tides
Arriving by chance at Quoddy Head, Campobello, I witness and document some of the most amazing tidal fluctuations in the world. Watch my stop motion slider…
Roosevelt Park, Campobello
Enchanted home of a great president, a bi-national park, beautiful bays, swamps and predatory plants. A foggy farewell to a magical island.
Nocturnal Eilat
Photo gallery. Night magic in the sea and the city of Eilat.
