Photo gallery. Edom Mountains snow. It actually snowed on the Jordanian Edom Mountains in Jordan the year of 2013, resulting in amazing views of snowy peaks in sheer desert, as viewed from the Israeli Arava Valley.
Photo gallery. 2013 was a rainy year for the otherwise water-thirsty Arava Valley, Israel. Seeds that laid dormant for years, some from northern regions, sprouted and bloomed, creating spectacular colorful niches in the otherwise parched land.
A small wooden house by a quaint Maine pond became my home away from home, Maine. Swimming, kayaking, sailing, picking blueberries and preparing for my upcoming sola camping trip in the north, I received the best possible hospitality and started to get acquianted with the natural beauty of the northeast.
The exciting ordeal of crossing from the land of stars and stripes to that of the maple leaf, from the toughness of border police to the warmth of an island home. My one and only cherished couchsurfing experience, and strong Canadian ladies. Welcome to Campobello Island!
Enchanted home of a great president, a bi-national park, beautiful bays, swamps and predatory plants. A foggy farewell to a magical island.
Ferns, fiddleheads and the highest tides in the world. Fundy bays fill up during high tide. Lovely families spend an educational weekend in a beautiful national park.
Lobster Cove Lighthouse – life lived on the edge of sea and land, rich in tradition but also in the unexpected. A spirit of generosity and hospitality manifests in a kitchen party thrown by the park authorities. A walk around lighhouse reveals the amazing geology and ecology of the island.
The Tablelands, Gros Morne – where Earth’s mantle is exposed. Primeval ,lunar landscapes. Plants accumulate toxic metals, mighty trees turn to crawling bushes, predatory plants get nutrients from insects. A highly recommended tour plus independent strolling.
Codroy Estuary Nature Reserve – Leaving Newfoundland in the rain, I stopped en route at this fabulous riparian bird conservacy. I gave the Atlantic a farewell visit and dried my tent in a gazebu downtown Port Aux Bosques, as I was waiting for the Marine Atlantic.
Climbing Mount Franey. Dragging behing all the younger folk, but nonetheless getting there. Exhilirating views. Worth every minute.
Sampling Mount Desert Island beaches: an enchanting evening walk on Hadley’s Point and a seaside bonfire with a friendly couple, a stroll along Southwest Harbor’s waterfront, dipping my toes at Seal Cove and a drive along the scenic Sargeant Road . In all, a great place for leisure, sun, sky and water,
Isle La Motte – Extraordinary beauty and wildlife. The oldest fossilized reef in the world at Goodsell Ridge Preserve. Site is also features: WTT – Walk Through Time: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? Another site of interest: St. Anne’s shrine, a religious historical monument.
Transferring into my first leanto and studying the variety of habitats on the Ironwood Trail, I spent another charming day on Lake Chmaplain.
Fisk Quarry Preserve, La Motte VT. An extraordinary chain of events led me from a quarry turned nature preserve, featuring the oldest fossilized reef, to the house of the people who fought to ascertain this is protected and safeguarded for future generations. Also an art barn and a pizza dinner in a home atmosphere.
Climbing two sections of Mount Whiteface, I saw how Nature takes after the Olympic human enterprise, how sunrays reflect back from mountain valleys into space and how a cloud collector in the Adirondacks measures pollution blowing over from Shanghai.
